Why has furniture flipping become so popular? There are many advantages to purchasing an old piece and giving it new life. For starters you are up-cycling something that would be put in a landfill. The furniture you are saving, whether it has dings, scratches can all be repaired with some work. Then you’ll have a one of a kind piece that is unique to your style. So the saying “they don’t make them like this anymore” could not be more true. Newer furniture is often made with particle board. The craftsmanship with old furniture is unlike what you would find today. Check out the furniture listed for sale today. I have upcycled all of it. Boho style
Boho is all the rage, with good reason. The picture with the fake leather sofa, teal ottoman and white festive fireplace, is my actual living room in my Victorian home. What if I told you that the entire living room from furniture to decor was ALL up-cycled? It is true! The entire room sofas included. Not everyone is lucky enough to get a fake leather sofa hand me down. Sofas are tricky. You would not want a hand me down if the previous owner had pets or smoked. In our case they did not. You’d be surprised what you’ll find out there that people are willing to just give away. I have found that picking up a large piece is a major help to a person looking to get rid of old furniture and usually want it out of their home as soon as possible. Many people either don’t want to be bothered or they might not have the means or muscle to move it. I am a big promoter of upcycling items and being stylish about it.
Back to boho. It feels so homey, who doesn’t like flopping on a giant fluffy pillow with comfy throws? Im not talking about stuff randomly thrown around. The designs and colors chosen can make an entire room look different. Colors, colors, colors is what BoHo is all about! Bright and vibrant there are no rules except one be bold. Pinks with yellow, teal and green yes please. Mix it up! Patterns, stripes, zigzags. Trust me you’ll love it. Wood pieces mixed with lacquer and leather puffs too. You can’t go wrong with this look.
Tips & what you will need for refinishing your own furniture.
First clean your furniture, clean it good. Look underneath too. I’ve been flipping my pieces upside down before anything. Why? Because the older the furniture the more likely it has been sitting. If it was sitting in a garage, basement even a home there will probably be spider webs. After cleaning it is Dixie Belle slick stick time. This is what I use and I highly recommend it. It is So great because it doesn’t require a lot of sanding. Think of it like primer but for furniture and even better because once this dries after a whole day or two then you’re ready to paint with chalk paint. What kind of chalk paint? I’ve tried mostly all of them. They are all good. If you want a wide variety of colors you’re gonna need to go with Annie Sloan or Dixie Belle. They cost more but are worth it. For white furniture I always go with the linen white rustoleum chalk paint from Home Depot. It is a nice bright white that is easy to put on. It is smooth and I like the finish. After a couple days of drying the next and last step I do is to apply poly acrylic clear water-based for the finishing topcoat.
Back to Basics
This fun little table was saved from being thrown away. It was a hot mess. Dark wood that was scratched & chipped. I saw the potential and had fun with it, the base was done with a robins egg blue. The top was sanded down to the bones and stained in layers of various natural tones. The mandala’s are hand painted. The entire piece was coated with clear poly acrylic.
